As I said yesterday, I visited Sakurajima. The island across the bay to Kagoshima and an island with one of the few active volcanos, not only in Japan, but the world.
I really did think it was going to be a little more dramatic, but, unfortunately it wasn’t. The volcano did spew out ash, but no lava and certainly no sides of mountains bursting into smoke and flames. Still, it was dramatic and interesting to learn about the volcano. Given the mountain used to be a huge hole in the bay 29,000 years ago it’s amazing it’s now a series of three peaks, the highest at 1,117 m. About 26,000 years ago the huge hole in the sea erupted and formed an island and the volcano has been active ever since.
