The Morality of Carbon Tax Price Increases.

So the carbon tax started. And there’s one thing everyone agrees on: the way the tax is explained. It is explained by both Government and Opposition as a tax on the biggest polluting companies which will then be passed on through price increases. The Opposition maintains that these big polluting companies do business with so many smaller companies and individuals that the tax amounts to a ‘great big tax on everything’. The government agrees that the big polluting companies will indeed pass these price increases on to consumers, which is why consumers are being offered compensation. The point I want to address is not an economic point, not whether it is true that the tax will be passed on – I’m sure it will be – but a moral point. Is it moral for big, polluting, and profitable companies to pass on the carbon tax to others and refuse…
