Carbon – what is the big deal?

Have you heard carbon or carbon dioxide mentioned in the media, in commercials and in terms of a footprint and wondered what the heck they were talking about?  Let me try to break it down for you.  We are all carbon-based life forms, but there really can be too much of a good thing.  Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is measured at various stations around the world, the most famous is the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii.  Over millions of years the amount of CO2 had risen and dropped as part of the natural cycle, that was until the industrial revolution.  Now the concentration in the atmosphere has gone way up up resulting in rising temperatures, more droughts, flooding and extreme storms.  Don’t believe me?  Check out this graph by NOAA and Scripps Institution of Oceanography:
